Exeter Chiefs scrum half Dave Lewis has been added to the England Saxons squad for next week’s match against Ireland Wolfhounds at Kingsholm.
Lewis, who was raised in Barnstaple, and Chiefs team-mates Sam Hill and Henry Slade were among a group of players brought in from outside the Elite Player Squad to form a squad of 25 today.
They replace injured players and those elevated to the senior England squad for the RBS Six Nations.
The Saxons play Ireland in Gloucester on Saturday, January 25, and Scotland A in Glasgow on Friday, January 31.
England head coach Stuart Lancaster said: “Our philosophy on selection is to give some younger players an opportunity alongside one or two more established players who are looking to push into the senior squad.
“It is a great opportunity for players to put a marker down and show they have the ability to go from club to country and still deliver the club form many of them have been showing.
“The opportunities ahead of them are clear with a major tour to New Zealand to come this summer before the Rugby World Cup next year.”
Lewis, 24, was born in Manchester but grew up in Barnstaple.
He played for England under-20s at the IRB Junior World Championships in Japan in 2009, scoring a try in defeat to New Zealand in the final. He had already represented his country at under-16 and under-18 level.
Lewis came through the Barnstaple junior teams and attended St Michael’s School, Tawstock, before winning a scholarship at Blundell’s School, Tiverton, and going on to Ivybridge College.
He joined Gloucester in 2007, making 88 appearances, then switched to Exeter in the summer. He has featured in 10 Aviva Premiership games this season and scored one try.
Lewis will start for Chiefs in tomorrow’s Heineken Cup match against Cardiff Blues at the Arms Park.
